Clive James

The Unreliable Memoirs of the (soon to be late) great and erudite Clive James are a delight; incredibly funny and very poignant, described as ‘putting to bed’ his childhood.  This is partly an ode to the authors’ native Australia but in a post war era the world generally was indeed a very different place……and James exploits this carefree and often downright dangerous side of his childhood wonderfully.  Having put down this finished novel (novella?) I felt that curious mixture of satisfaction, tinged with sadness, knowing that any other read will never be quite the same…..
